USA name women's junior team

The US won the NORCECA Women’s Junior Continental Championship last year so will fancy their chances at the FIVB Volleyball Women's Volleyball Championship in July
Colorado, USA, May 13, 2011 – The US women’s junior volleyball team was named on Thursday as the side begins a defining season, highlighted by the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship set to be held in Peru from July 20 to 31.

Prior to leaving for Peru, the team will train from July 10 to 19 at Saint Mary’s College in California under the direction of coach Rob Browning.

"While the competition will be fierce in Peru this summer, we have a group of players and coaches who can win it all,” Browning said. “We want to return with the World Championship trophy."

Six players named in the 2011 squad competed with the 2010 team that captured gold at the NORCECA Women’s Junior Continental Championship held in Tijuana, Mexico. Returning players include outside hitters Kelly Reeves and Stephanie Holthus. Returning middle blockers include Haleigh Hampton and Carly Wopat. Molly Kreklow is the lone returning setter and Jennifer Bonilla returns as a libero.

New to the team are outside hitters Moneshia Simmons, Madison Kingdom and Haley Eckerman. Middle blocker Sallie McLaurin, setter Lauren Plum and libero Natalie Hagglund all join the team for the first time.

Browning, who also coached the 2010 side, will be assisted by Erik Sullivan and Jill Kramer. Sullivan is the assistant women’s volleyball coach at the University of Texas, while Kramer is the women’s volleyball coach at West Virginia University. Denise Corlett, associate coach at Stanford University, will serve as the team leader.

"Our goal is to win the World Championship and we have selected a team that can do it,” Browning added. “The selection process was very competitive and there are some outstanding players who were left off the roster. We have a number of veterans from last year's NORCECA Championship team as well as some new addition and I am excited to see them come together and form a cohesive team. The coaches we have selected to join me are also exceptionally good and I feel fortunate to be able to work with them."

USA finished 12th at the last Women’s Junior World Championships in Thailand and are yet to win a medal in the biennial tournament with their highest finish coming in 2007 when they finished fourth.
